Park Cemetery is the town's municipal cemetery, and is owned and run by Erewash Borough Council.
The Cemetery was created in response to growth in Ilkeston’s population in the late 19th century and the lack of burial space. As there were only three graveyards of any size – the churchyards of St Mary’s and Christ Church in Cotmanhay and mostly non-conformist Stanton Road Cemetery – the Borough of Ilkeston bought the 22-acre site in 1891.

When the first interment took place in September 1892, the chapels had yet to be built and the wide expanse of ground was bare of trees and shrubbery. The adjacent roads were new; Park Avenue and Park Road were laid to serve the cemetery. Designed by the Ilkeston Borough Surveyor H J Kilford, the two chapels - joined by a centralcopyright (c) Grant Shaw 2012carriageway with a tower and spire above - were not built until 1909/1910. They currently carry a Grade II listing.

Many well known inhabitants of Ilkeston since the 1890's are buried here including Mayors, local industrialists, Justices of the Peace, Police and Councillors. Most of these graves are marked by large stone memorials, some with statues or elaborate carving.
There are also many unmarked graves of those who could not afford a grand memorial.  Park Cemetery contains a woodland burial area as well as cremated interment plots and is still used for most local burials today.

As well as the official War Memorial, the Cemetery contains many War Graves, most with the iconic portland stone markers showing regimental or service crest. Some of these are from recent conflicts.
In addition there are the graves of hundreds of other local people from the last 120 and more years. The cemetery contains some very interesting headstones and statues and some very moving tributes written on memorials and kerbs.
We are sure you will find Park Cemetery an interesting and restful place.
  • Do please remember when visiting that this is still a working cemetery and always treat the area with respect.
